Philip Frey was born in Maine in 1967, graduated with a BFA in painting from Syracuse University, studied with artist Alan Bray, and currently resides in Sullivan, Maine. His work centers around both natural and urban landscape, working fishing villages, as well as the figure and interior spaces. He paints en plein air and uses photographic reference to inform his studio work. ”I am inspired by the places around me, both natural and urban locations, color harmonies and the changing light on the landscape forms. Painting offers me a compelling way of relating with the ephemeral reality of the senses and a medium to communicate that mysterious and joyful relationship.”
